By what she has come to think of
as her ivory tower,
she sits alone,
bursting, bruised and quite undone.
Strangers offer her society and warmth
whilst friends have lowered her to below the salt.
The man whom once she gave her soul to hold
impatient now, unyielding, scolds -
the tincture of their trust
evaporates slowly in the searing sun.
In those dark recesses where no reason lurks
she longs to beg, pierce and bludgeon
this monumental dispassion.
Instead, defiant to the last,
she resets her aching heart's alarm
and turns fretful feet to oblivion in dance.

Hi Dorothy.

Strangers offer her society and warmth
whilst friends have lowered her to below the salt.

is very moving.

I love the feeling that there is something positive in the closing lines.

I really enjoyed this.

I admire the spirit. Stalwart to the end. Open to many things, but not compromising oneself. This takes courage.

More please.

Why is she alone?
Giving of the heart,or did she take it away before more hurt became her.

Thank you all. This poem was straight from the heart at the end of a relationship which had meant the world to me. But instinct, if not not hope itself, springs eternal and we must not allow ourselves to be beaten.
