Whether ripped off
in a violent paroxysm of delight
or picked at carefully, slowly,
to preserve and prolong the effect,
its destruction will be absolute.

What sat so long
on supermarket shelves, then in secret places,
to emerge at dead of evening with
its entourage of tape and ribbon and tags,
will soon be annihilated.

Excitement mounts and tension rises,
while beneath the Christmas tree, an absurd
swarm of mayflies, resplendent in seasonal finery,
will live but a few days.

Love the mixture of humour and sadness in this, and the comparison to mayflies is great! It left me with a nice sense of the meaninglessness of it all - if you see what I mean!!...

A minor-keyed poem and at this time of year we need more of them ...

:))

Perhaps the wrappings will have their moment of glory, as children always seem more keen to play with the boxes than the expensive presents within!

Nice!

Hi joanie, I loved the surprise of the mayflies, and felt they were real, imagined you somewhere warm and balmy. Best wishes for 2005 to everyone!

Nell.

joanie, I loved the way you communicated the excitement and the effort that goes into trying to make nice things last longer than they tend to. The image of mayflies is just right at the end.

Lovely poem.
