O risible shapeshifter
At the extremities of nature you lurk
In each different guise you skulk

Where on the battlefield death’s laid bare
Where murder and unkindness tread

An attack! Straight for the kill!
The line of sight at your command
Spear and pin kings and queens alike
Four elements, four compass points unite

Foursquare at each quarter, each tower does stand
Earth and air, fire and water
The live and the dead,
Both black and white to the slaughter
O hooded Corvid of the night

The Rook! Ellenna you are right!
It was that hooded Corvid of the night!

Where on the battlefield death’s laid bare?
- Why, tis both carrion and the chessboard square

Murder and unkindness? - For Corvid birds a collective word
At the extremes foursquare? - That’s the castle towers at each corner of the board

The line of sight? - Straight along the ranks and files attack
while spearing and pinning kings and queens both white and black!

Ancient elements? - they represent in ancient lore
and compass points they number four

Both live and dead ? Tis what they eat and leave a mess, yet,
and live and the dead, why both the bird, and piece in the chess set!

A :o)

just some fun really

as its Midsummer Night tomorrow, Shakespearian overtones seem appropriate?
