Crime of Passion

I reached up for the handle, pulled down, opened slowly, stepped out, looked about and then tiptoed silently across the hall.
No-one around. Nobody to witness me embark upon my epicurean adventure.
The swishing dishwasher winked as I plonked myself down silhouetted in fridge-light, unscrewed and removed the lid and delved my arm deep into the jar of my purple passion. I took my fill greedily, carefully screwed back the lid and placed the jar safely upon the same shelf.
I thought I’d got away with it, that I had covered my tracks. My crime would never be discovered. I was not to know that despite my cunning, my midnight beetroot euphoria had left tiny but distinctly purple footprints leading straight back to my bedroom door.

Fantastic Bob! I didn't think anyone loved beetroot as much as my Dad. I hope you don't mind, but I'd really love to show him this poem!
'midnight beetroot euphoria'. Inspired!
A very enjoyable read, giggle-inducing too :-)

Christina, I understand exactly! I prefer the vacuum packed type; eaten whole off the end of a fork, like a toffee apple. I can eat a full pack. Delicious.
I love the way you have built up the midnight secrecy. I liked The swishing dishwasher winked ....
I enjoyed this.

I love the vacuum-packed stuff too! The beetroot in this piece is homemade - my ma used to put them in really quite large jars in the fridge. I guess I must have been around the age of 4. It's a fond childhood memory that my parents enjoy relating from time to time.
Glad you enjoyed it Joanie!

Thanks, wasn't sure whether it was clear! Current beetroot forays no longer involve nocturnal floorboard creaking!

Red a brilliant piece. Can almost see you sneaking down and eating the beetroot without anyone knowing.
Pity you didn't have Ellie then, she would have licked up the evidence.
Light hearted and a great change.
Well done.

Thanks RM, you're right, needed my dog to remove the evidence! Glad you liked it - unlike you I haven't written much, if anything, on childhood experiences or children per se - just fancied having a crack at it.
Thanks again.

The Walrus, so the 'R-Whites' people got the idea for their old advert from you and your beetroot, a secret beetroot eater! 'my epicurean adventure', is a great line, as is, 'my midnight beetroot euphoria'! It begs to be read again and again, which I have done a few times now! I love it! Great work!
Thanks

beatroot?? "epicurean adventure" for beetroot???!!
absolutely loved this poem but am still reeling from the shock of learning that someone GETS OUT OF BED for that "purple passion" (great line) am inspired to go and get soome beetroot to see what my tastebuds have been neglecting to tell me!
there are some great lines in this poem which create a reall naughtiness about the poem, it made me feel as though the poem should be whispered and youo definitly get a picture of you tiptoeing silently down the hall
great poem

So cute, knowing it was a 4 year old, I did wonder about the tiny footprints. Beetroot's a funny thing isn't it - people either love it or hate it. I've only just realised its attractions. What I like about this is it's reality, detail and everydayness. I think that's what poetry should be about.

Thanks all for comments. Don, yes, as said see the similarity on the R Whites ad! Laura, yes, it was a hard confession, but unfortunately true! Needless to say I do not do this now. I'm generally quite open about my purple passion and feel I can approach the jar without the need for secrecy. I have also discovered that using a fork is preferable! Elsie, glad you enjoyed the everydayness feel of it. I wasn't sure this would that make it seem a little dull, feel reassured. Thanks.
