Fairy forty five years on

by joanie

Summary: When I was clearing out my parents' house after their deaths two years ago, I came across an envelope marked, 'Joan's poems (childhood)', which contained old sheets from an exercise book with various verses. This would have been written when I was about 8, I should think. I thought I would up-date it for a bit of fun!

The Pretty Fairy

The sun is setting on the western hill,
the sky is all aglow,
a little fairy comes out to play,
she is pretty from head to toe.

A cobweb makes her silvery wings,
five leaves do make a skirt.
For a hat she wears an acorn cup,
she helps all people hurt.

Next morning, when the sun does rise,
she'll wash herself in dew,
then go to bed and curl up tight
and dream of dreams come true.

Joan Deakin - aged 8-ish

The world's helper

We watched the western sky
as it moved through golden, russett, crimson,
until the whispers of darkness
sent a frisson up our spines.

This was surely when those
unknown, imagined beings set out into
the half-light, half-truth, half-belief
time of fairy hours.

I swear I saw her - all
alone, innocently resplendent in her
cobweb wings, acorn-cup hat, leaf skirt,
an image of compassion.

Her half-fabricated figure
gave us faith that there are those who still can
put all selfishness aside and secretly
give themselves to the world.

i thought for a second the eight year old you had penned the 2nd one word for word as well and was thinking child genuis! a beautiful mature sensitive adaption of a subject matter that has ovbiously stayed important to you . if i'd written the first at as an 8yr old i would have been proud-as i would be of the second now. they are both lovely poems there is a purity and simplicity about the two that seems to transcend age

Joanie, I found both of these poems so touching. It seems that we are born what we are at heart - the eight-year-old Joanie as tender-hearted and with the same concerns as the grown-up. The first is charming, and I love the way you've found the perfect adult note for the second whilst retaining the fairy. A very difficult feat to accomplish!

Lovely.

Nell.

Laura and Nell, thank you both for your lovely responses. I didn't expect these to touch a chord so much; I hesitated before posting, but I'm glad I did now!

I can only think of one thing to say about both these pieces Joan - brilliant!

You never seem to fail to deliver joanie, even at such a tender age! Two lovely, but different, poems here. I love the innocence of the first poem, and the more 'mature', adult nature of the second. The, 'sent a frisson up our spines', line, is a cracker! A most enjoyable read!

Thanks

Don

I too echo the sentiments above. I'm really glad you found your old (or young actually) poetry and chose to share it with us. The younger Joan certainly had the makings of the fine poet she became.

A really touching poem joanie;I was really impressed by your child inteligence, writting so well at 8y`s of age.
In the first poem of course it was as you were a child ,but the second poem followed through the same thread to a greater understanding of creative expression, but never forgetting the child inside .
The last stanza really did it for me,surely there should always be icing on cakes.

Hi Joanie

I just decided to take a walk through your work and found this. You have shown in this work that if we stay true to who we are, we can hold on to our dreams - at least that it what I am taking from this work. I really appeciate the care you took with the second part to protect the eight year old Joanie. I think this says a lot about you. And its all positive. S
