It’s easily missed
sandwiched as it is
between The Birthday Shop
and Grim’s Kebab House.

Entrance is free,
but they make a killing
on the drinks as the willing
prostrate themselves
unblinking, unthinking
at the altar of Bacchus.

Everyone’s there -
the divas, the geeks,
the city boyz, transvestites and freaks -
in this shimmery, evanescent paradise
of winged limbs surrounded
by frondy planty things,
exposed ductwork and terracotta-smeared
Eastend-dun-good brickwork.

Something for everyone
hip-hop, rap, funk,
house, old skool, R&B
whatever you want honey
just ask the DJ whipping
his followers into a frenzied
shared love of ear bleed.

Everybody’s free to be
who they wannabe
the neon glitter ball
spins spangled dreams into reality
as the shape-throwing crowd
throbs amidst the fug
of Malboro Light cloud.

Everybody’s up for it,
jungle beats bleed
eau de testosterone
amidst pheromone hurricane
emboldening lithe-footed young bloods
who bare their teeth
and stalk their prey with ferocity.

Time and cares left upon the doorstep
as tequila slammered hours fly by
and revellers unleash into the night.

Welcome to Club life -
shelter from people who think
white leather is an excellent substitute for personality
and who wouldn’t understand irony
if it slapped them repeatedly around the face
with a large purple lounge lizard called Wilfred.

This is fabulous, so damn real, vibrant and alive. Laced with fantastically colourful imagery. I can smell the smoke 'throbs amidst the fug/of Malboro Light cloud'. I love the whole poem and so many people will be able to relate to this. It's spot on. The final stanza is marvellous with 'white leather is an excellent substitute for personality'. What a class line. The ending is sublime:

if it slapped them repeatedly around the face
with a large purple lounge lizard called Wilfred

What more can one say! Hilarious!

More lady.
Em

P.S. Would love to write more on this, and could easily, but have to cook now

xx

Christina, I love the opening. I think this is excellent - very descriptive - I am there in the fug of Malboro Light cloud.

I like the rhymes: killing/willing; unblinking/unthinking; geeks/freaks.

The whole thing is wonderful, very enjoyable.

Em, Joanie, thanks, it kinda started off doing the club as analogy of life (first line each stanza), think I got a bit carried away tho and it sort of morphed into something else!

Glad you enjoyed it! Thank yoouuuuu!

Bob/Christina (help id crisis, just woke up)

The Walrus, I hear this loud and clear! I've been spending a bit too long 'at the altar of Bacchus' lately and you've captured 'Clublife' brilliantly. I particularly loved the last verse, 'white leather is an excellent substitute for personality', this had me in stitches! Great work!

Cheers Don, glad it spoke to you. Yeah, the last stanza kind of turned into a bit of a whiplash thing.

Thanks.

Utterly brilliant. Sweaty, silly, boozy, vapid, energetic, hedonistic, dressed to the nines, perfumed to kill at fifty paces, and superbly written. Loved the white leather line in particular.

Lost in admiration,

Mike

So soho, yes. Like the idea of hedonism being accessible to the masses... always used to be.

Thanks for commenting Patrick.
