Just called to say I love you
wanted you to know
I treasured all the things you did
just wanted you to know.

When you held me in your arms
kissed my brow
told me I would be safe
knowing i wasn't.

I laughed away your tears
not knowing what would follow.
Said it was just a chill
on Christmas day it was shallow.

"we will not know for 3 more days"
Doctor told my mum.
"See how the virus goes,
where it will run.

Still that Christmas was full of fun
did I have polio,no one sure
I didn't care just having fun.
children never do.

Results came in
all was clear
pneumonia was to blame
lungs not clear.

Still a happy chappie
very very happy
living life to the full
no regrets,nothing dull.

I "wanted you to know" that I liked this very much.
Life does go on and we must embrace it!
Good one Al.

Alice, this has grave undertones, but it comes across as everyday, run-of-the-mill things with a happy outcome. We all have to face things; no point getting in a state. I like the opening lines and the two closing ones. Nice one.

Chem thanks for the comments. Only adults fear for the future, children never do.

Joan,I am run of the mill kind of person.
Yes I called mum hours after she died to tell her she had died and that I loved her.

A moving glimpse of family life and love. And I agree with Lawrenco: you capture the 'apprehension of the atmosphere well'. Love nikki xx

NB 'Life goes on' and your poem also seems to me to say 'Love goes on' :-)
