This is a wonderful piece of writing. Well-paced, touching and believable. The letter flows and reveals the true situation while we wonder what the outcome will be.

One little thing: near the beginning he says 'We are free, or so it seems.' I wonder if you don't mean 'Or so they say/or so we are told.' because he doesn't seem to be free.

Do you have any plans for this?
