Poverty

The cord plays out
then tightens hard,
a one handed strangle
on a running dogs throat.

His body shudders down
and back jacks to earth,
his red tongue bleeding
on the bitter taste of rope.

Imagination equals suffering,
dream is a nights worth of beer
pissed away in the morning, or
a poor dog left out in the rain.

I looked at this last night, and thought it was very good, but I didn't know quite what to say. It makes me feel sad. But I think I'm a bit confused between the dog and the blokes experience. Perhaps I'm meant to be. I do like it though, particularly the last stanza.

A very powerful disturbing image drawing meaning on several levels both literally and metaphorically. Ignorance and cruelty, neglect and indifference, mans' inhumanity and unequal struggle - and the poet's uneasy and bloody relationship with imagination and meaning, words and symbols.Pissed up and floundering with a poor dog left out in the rain.
