The harvest of the sea

She sees the blood red sun
Climb the horizon
Spreading fingers of daylight
Ever wider,
Casting shadows on
Azure blue sea.
Low mist hanging
Omnipresent in the valley,
Smoke carried on
Early morning breeze.
The engine chugs diesel life
With a splutter,
Propelling the fishing boat
Undulant,
From the saftey of
Solid harbour walls.
She smells salt tinged seaweed
On fresh clean air
And hears the chatter
Of hungry gulls.
Yellow slashes of sand nestle
Amongst rocky coves,
White horses break
Over jagged rocks.
She feels the swell rise
As the rugged cliffs
And rolling green
Fade from view.
Flapping frenzied fish
Loose battle for life
Pressurised eyeballs bulging,
Mouths agape before her.
Steel reflects sun
In a flash
As knife meets flesh,
A swarm of birds dive
Chaotic for cold innards
Floating on a
White water wake,
As the sea gives up her harvest.

i can taste the salt

hear the screech of the gulls

and smell the diesel tinged odour of the fish

very evocotive and memories of a misspent adolescence long lining off

Brighton in the days when they used to have two grand piers

Every sense is used here, and makes the reader feel as though they are experiencing the sensations themselves. A very powerful piece of work.

It's not the time for clever analogy or erudite allegory is it, just recollection at leisure, a touch of regret that something personal prevented the experience being what it could have been.
