Gods Working Class

A holy boy
sent to Priest
and brother us
on gods behalf,
sent at the age
of ten into black
forests of cloth
& burning wood.

A poor boy
sent to feast
upon the rich
mans vineyards,
his lips stained
red by Christ's
peasant blood.

An angry boy
sent to calm
in the garden
of hearts.

Walking in pine
scented clearings
beside the lake
passing locks
through close
bitten fingers.

A boy far out
from home
tracking down
his God.

Somewhere
over the years
he still lives,
desperately
trying to avoid
the unwanted
embarrassments
of men.

Very powerful stuff - a fusion of religion, nature and mystery which particularly appealed to me. The images used are very pungent, which maybe is why I don't like "pine scented clearings" - it doesn't quite suit the rest of the piece - can it be a punchier scent?

It reminds me very much of Ted Hughes, by the way!
