I chased my shadow across a moonlit night
Where was I going? My reflection cared not.
As hill turned to plain and rock to grass,
It was not through pain I laid down and gazed.

A thousand lights filled my needy soul,
And crisp dry air replaced my aching lungs.
My body afloat on the largest of seas
It was none of these thoughts that engulfed my mind.

Had my shadow run off to a vacant land?
Were the lights in the sky a million dreams?
I could float but swim? I never dared try
My life have I lived? Not even for a day.

Gosh, this really speaks of the ultimate soul-searching contemplation. The 'chasing your shadow' idea has always been a rather contradictory action - it's like chasing yourself, trying to keep up with yourself for wherever you go your shadow goes - who is leading who? Makes you dizzy thinking about it!

I could float but swim? I never dared try

This spoke volumes really - someone merely floating - doing the easy thing - taking the easy route etc but not daring to swim i.e. live life, experience life etc..

Hence...

My life have I lived? Not even for a day.

Perfect. Wonderfully layed out poem - very vivid imagery - particularly the lights that could be a million dreams. Reminded me of someone looking down at a city from a very high hilltop or perhaps the Northern Lights...

Good one.

Nahed (who's still wearing swimming arm bands - but aren't we all? ;) )
