Dear, Dear old Larry

Playing the part how well he adapts
Bellowing prose and foolhardy slaps
Strutting around quoting Shakespeare and Shaw
Considering himself with inconceivable awe
Tramping the boards the way thespians do
Egotistically believing all the compliments are true
Dressed scant in a robe, I Claudius, the man
Etonian narcissus, his own greatest fan
As the end is here, he modestly milks the praise
Then drags himself back for the curtain to raise
So many to please, such a burden to carry
For the last great player, dear, dear old Larry.

Hi Paul,

this is a beautiful poem and a great tribute. Olivier would have loved this, the old thesp. He was one of my favourites, love him in Rebecca. You've captured his persona perfectly in your poem. Excellent.

It was not about Olivier in particular. It was meant to be ironic about actors. If any actor felt it was as a tribute I would be gutted. Thanks for your time anyway

Paul great one.
Was my favourite actor. Remembered mostly for shakespear, yet my favourite part was as Heathcliffe. Still see him now.
Would have made a good Yorkshireman.
Well done.
xx Alice
