Intercede

In the still and empty scream of 1:00 a.m. he’d cradle his tumbler with both hands. “Nora Kirwan, intercede for me. Paul Barry, Francis Louis Reagan, Patsy Dowd, Jim Feeney, John Fallon; intercede for me.” A convocation of the dead by one too sick of seeking forgiveness in whiskey.

Orange

She said she wanted to taste an orange and remember times before war and cancer changed everything. Taking the train to Hull, we bought one from a sailor. She was dead when we got back. Halving the dark rose blood-orange, we felt it weep down our chins.

Mac,

Loved "still and empty scream of 1:00am" (immediately saw red digital numbers on the bedside alarm clock); also "cradle his tumbler in both hands" - that one detail outlines to us his whole body posture (and makes me see him sitting on the side of a bed. Is that how you visualised him? Or is that just me?)

"A convocation of the dead by one too sick of seeking forgiveness in whiskey." I thought "too" set up the expectation of an answering phrase, ie "too sick of seeking forgiveness in whiskey to ....".

A vivid picture of self-loathing, soul-sickness. Great.

Take care
Andrea

I loved the last sentence: A convocation of the dead by one too sick of seeking forgiveness in whiskey.
In fact I found it all very moving.
Great stuff.
