Memories

“Oh please wear them, for me, go on.”

“I don’t want to.” She said, crossing her arms in a gesture she knew would have little or no effect. “They’re hideously uncomfortable and besides they’re so old.”

“But I love seeing you in them darling, you know what I mean.”

Oh here we bloody go she thought, the orders, the controlling, and the bullying, how much more could she take. But instead of standing up to him, she simply shrugged and said.

“But they’re so out of fashion, people will laugh at me.”

Her husband of over forty years shook his head, that smug patronising grin she’d become accustomed to never once leaving his face.

“Nonsense, classics always stay in fashion, I should know.

Naturally, she thought. Bloody typical, all these years there’s been three of them in this marriage, him, her and his ego.

She tried another tack.

“I’ve put on weight over the years darling, I’ve spread, they’re too tight.”

“Nonsense, they fit you like a glove, I can testify to that remember?”

Every one had been so thrilled when they finally wed, a fairy tale union they exclaimed, talk about a happily ever after ending, they’ll last the course, oh if anyone can make it work that pair can.

And look at them now, nudging toward their golden anniversary, never a bad word uttered, never an argument slept on, just a cold creeping resentment steadily growing, seeping through their lives like a dirty great stain.

“Please wear them tonight darling, it takes me back to when we first met, please do that for me, go on, just this once.”

Even though she’d long hardened her heart to him she nodded, giving in finally.

“Allow me,” he said bending down on one leg and gently ever so gently placing the shoes on her feet, squeezing her pitiful bunions hard against the glass then not even noticing when she winced in pain.

“There you go, Cinderella my princess, my, my you make me feel like a young man again.”
Bastard, she thought, smiling sweetly, you bastard.

Jubbly, ohh this one hurts- 'squeezing her pitiful bunions against the glass'- yuck and ow. It's a flippant piece n some ways but that whacking great moment- ' just a cold creeping resentment steadily growing, seeping through their lives like a dirty great stain' really is a belter. Are these short shorts for a reason, I mean are they forming a collection? I hope so. It's funny, they don't feel too short, more like snapshots of relationships/etc.

Jubbly,

I hope you realise that you have destroyed this precious illusion for me? Na, just kiddin - great stuff, I didn't see it coming.

I will go and dig out my Hans Christian Anderson for some inspiration.

Thanks Anna and Bill. Yes they are for a reason, they are part of my Cafedirect Lift play. Morpheous Descending, each short is a dream, dreamt by the couple who are sleeping, the dreams represent the meltdown of their marriage. Oh dear, doesn't that sound wanky, hope it's not.

Julie,
What a sweet gesture it was for her to give in to her husband's wish, even if she wanted to punch the bastard in the face.
I like how this is told in the 3rd person and more in the wife's head rather than the husband's.

"that smug patronising grin that she had become accustomed to never once leaving his face"-Made me want to smack the husband too. And I'm a guy, I'm supposed to be on his side.
Nice execution.

Whaaaat? I just realized its a parady on Cindarella +40 years. She tires of the Prince? Typical. No, I'm just kidding.

Don't mind me, Julie. I'm retarded. You're gonna have give me footnotes for every line you post up on here. Ok?

Nice one, Julie! I certainly didn't see this punchline coming, and it's very far from corny - nice and bittersweet. Once more you made me laugh out loud. Your Edinburgh show is bound to be a sell out and a big success.

Btw, Crowspark, try the Brothers Grimm instead. The original stories are really, really gruesome. For example the wicked stepsisters cut pieces off their feet to try and fit into the glass slipper - you didn't get that in Disney!

Julie, brilliant as usual, but not suitable for children. Hope you insist on a lower age limit for your play, or you may be sued for psychological problems in your audience at a later date!

Nell.

Hi Jubbly,

Blimey, this one really packs a punch. I was hoping as I started reading it that the bullying voice would be a mother, or even a grandmother... then the word "husband" kicks in... and the decription of his face... it really made me shudder. And Anna's so right... the line about the seeping stain is absolutely masterful...
The whole thing is perfect. "Someday my Prince Will Come" goes right off the record player... bring on the Alisha's Attic... :-)

Really excellent writing, Julie. Thanks for sharing it.

Julie, I do like these 'snapshots.' This one has a lovely curdled edge to it. Don't forget to let us know when the show's on.

Didn't we just know it would all turn out like this in the end?! The woman always was too eager to please. Brilliant. Great punchline

After your last couple I did see this one a comin' but as always Jubbly you write it so well that it's a pleasure to read. By the way, I'm reading your work in Sydney at the moment. Nice to have your work read in the home country, I imagine.

Hi Jubbly, I enjoyed reading this. I liked the line 'that smug patronising grin she'd become accustomed to never once leaving his face' and the bit about his ego.

Thanks Eyeball, Mooncat and Sion, I'm glad you enjoyed. Sion what a surprise, where do you live? I just this minute sent an email to a mate in Elizabeth Bay, oh so homesick now.

Cheers

Julie

This was again, great. I guess Cinderella should've run while she had the chance...and kept running! Morpheus Descending does sound intriguing and I wouldn't mind watching it. When is it on again?

Live in Singapore now. But was travelling on business which is why I've been a bit quiet. Lived in Mosman for a few years. Sydney was great - nice chill in the air but sunny. Even managed a little dip at Manly.

Hi Waxlyrikal, sorry I'm late getting back to you, glad you liked my Cinders. Morpheous is on in the Cafediret Lift at The Pleasance Courtyard, Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Not sure of the dates but pretty much all of August at 9.20pm each evening. Hope you can make it.
