There’s a stillness here now, I knew it would come,
I sought it as a friend knowing that one day
It would arrive unannounced and stay
For as long as I needed it.

No - not as long as I needed it, but to the end.
And I realised that it was the watcher,
The night friend, the calmer of fears, the bringer
Of courage, the setter of example, the peacemaker.

Would that I could speak to this stillness, this
Shroud shadow, if only to know its name, and to ask
That it won’t let my courage fail me, desert me.
I must show my children how it should be done.

After all, you only get one chance, don’t you,
To show them that you are a man, that courage
Unbending is the essence of who you are.
Ah well, it will be alright on the day.

John,

This is the third heartbreaking piece I've read this morning - it's odd how it seems to happen like that. The words speak for themselves in a way that feels so real, and reach out to touch feelings we try to ignore most of the time. After the depth of thought/feeling expressed in the poem, the almost dismissive philosophy of the last line made me want to hug the narrator/poet. How different from Dylan Thomas' Do not go Softly... Deceptively simple, simply beautiful.

Best, Nell.

I loved this too, John. Very thought-provoking. I have re-read it several times.

Hello Nell,

What you say in your comments always matters to you doesn't it, you don't put something down just to be polite, or to be a bit of a booster perhaps. That is why your responses are to be looked for and enjoyed. Hug in absentia greatly appreciated.

Hello Joanie,

Thankyou also, it is always pleasing to do something that strikes a chord with people. Take care, and keep writing.

It`s strange I have just been talking about Reincarnation then I read this .I remember when my Dad died I felt his presence for a good year afterwards.
The Shroud shadow that you speak of has that same consolling feel.Perhaps we do come back ;it certainly makes sense to me,and not to worry it`s trying to say v.real v. moving.
