CAPTIVE LOVE

Across a crowded room we saw
a conflict from afar,
powerful message, electric current
coming from where you are.

Drawn we were from that day forth
nothing to mar the way we felt,
no noise from the people around,
just a peaceful heavenly sound.

Through the years our passion grew,
A love given only to a few
two halves of a whole,
one being, one soul.

What happened to our oneness
that tore our spirit apart,
split the heart, split the soul,
crucifying our minds?

Taken away while still in your prime
leaving a shell behind,
no more love, the lights gone out
captive in love, not life.

Hi Alice
I thought this very moving, obviously. Two little points - the last line, I'm not sure if I understood, as I'm reading it that the (your) partner is was still there physically, but not mentally. Or, (I've just realised) that you are the shell behind? The other thing that bothered me was the repetition of afar, at the beginning. Very sad though, very sad. Best wishes.

Thank you for your comments.
Amended the first stanza.
My partner is no longer there physically. He died, hence the empty shell which is me.
Last line means i am still captive in the love we had. not captive in the life i lead.

Thank you.
xx Alice

A very moving poem, that reminds us that it's more than okay to be captivated, enchanted by a love, even though life itself may have moved on.
