What dust lies still, encased in stone
inscribed with reverential word?
Men who rose to heights unknown,
whose voices are no longer heard.

Their marble image still remains.
In effigy, they lie at rest.
Yet once, warm blood flowed through their veins,
a heart beat strong within their breast.

But time diminishes their power,
as others strive to take their place
and then in that one shining hour,
reach the pinnacle of Grace.

HI!

Spendid piece, style perfectly matching content; I love the discipline and grace of the verse form; it has a distincly late 17th/ early 18th century feel to it. I really felt that if I came across this in an anthology, I would accept it as coming from a couple of hundred years ago, such is the classical poise and style of it. Truly excellent.

Love & Mercy,

Mike

Thanks Mike, glad you enjoyed it. It does feel a little like an old fashioned type of poem, but then I'm an old fashioned kind of girl.

Hi

yes, i too liked its historic feel..and the traditional style..seems to fit well with the subject..

particularly liked the lines

But time diminishes their power,
as others strive to take their place
and then in that one shining hour

I like the rhythm, but not quite sure if the last line flows as well for some reason..

enjoyed
Mike
