I stand by the mirror
full of question and doubt
I close my eyes tightly
and silently shout
I'm feeling so lost
can't think who I am
am I a lion
or am I a lamb

I look in the mirror
and what do I see,
the eyes of my mother
as she smiles back at me.
she gives me direction
she gives more than enough
my vision and guidance
I'm filled with her love

I look in the mirror
and what do I see
the arms of my father
setting me free
strong and enclosing
provider and shield
raw strength and protection
his love unconcealed

I look in the mirror
and what do I see
the support of my friends
they stand around me
in good times or bad
I'll never lack, for
these guardian angels
are there at my back

Many years had I wasted
On my own, knew it all
From childhood to teenage
Just waiting to fall
But those angels around me
Kept true to my side
Caught and restored me
Kept safe by my guides

So I look in the mirror
I raise my head high
and lifting my shoulders
to myself I reply
I look in the mirror
and what do I see
I am love, strength and kindness
the sum of all three.

"What do you want to be when you grow up?" "Kind," said the boy. (Charlie Mackesy, The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse). I watched the televised cartoon version of that story on Christmas Day in 2023, if I remember rightly, taking that quote to heart, having watched, years before that, also at Christmas, "The Snowman" with the young boy soprano, Aled Jones, 'Walking in the air'. Your poem is on a par with these special moments that I think perhaps people are more receptive to at Christmas than at any other time of year. There's certainly a feel-good factor involved in the heartwarming conclusion to this poem:
I look in the mirror
and what do I see?
I am love, strength and kindness,
the sum of all three.

Very good, David. Very good indeed!
