Petts Wood Oak

Petts Wood oaks supplied the strakes for many a ship back in the days of Samuel Pepys.
William Willett rode these woods at dawn and proposed it would be good to wind back clocks, his daylight saving plan.
There was one oak stripped bare and hollowed we children called the Petts Wood crocodile.
Upon its cracked and gnarled back we lept parried and attacked pirates breaking from waves of fern.
When we boys were driven off I crept deep inside the rotten log and with my bellowed 'tick' and 'tock' put a fear up Captain Hook.

You lived in Chislehurst before you lived in Shropshire, Bill? It's a pity William Willett didn't live to see his idea of DST (Daylight Saving Time) implemented by the British government in May1916, having died of influenza in 1915. I'm constantly surprised by how close you are, even in later life, to you childhood and boyhood. It must be a great source of comfort to you. 'Strakes' are the planks, etc. used to build the sides of wooden ships?

If I read something and create mind pictures I know it’s good. If I see lots of pictures I know it’s very good. I saw lots of pictures. Is ‘lept’ an old version of ‘leapt’ or was it a typo?

Thanks Michael.I lived in Lancashire as well! Petts Wood was at the top of the hill I lived on. At the bottom of the hill was school and lots of people. I was at my happiest in the woods.
Thanks Roger. Lept is archaic (poetic?) spelling of leaped. I don't like leaped much :( I enjoyed your poem, Roger. I hope you join in?

I thought that must be the case - I can't see you doing typos .
I thinkl I've applied to join - currently pending - but TBH, reluctantly. Bazz recently told me that my understanding of 'flash' was wrong, and I THINK he hinted that you can pretty much post anything. So now Im bemused. Assuming I get my badge, I think I'll try doing what I like with a willingness to be shouted at.

I love how when you write about playing you really seem like a little boy again, Bill.

made me smile. I think boys are better at play than girls. Girls are always so serious!
