The world screams
in my ear
in headlines
I shake my head
to rid the static
of inflation
oil prices
and war

Tinnitus anxiety
workload and
expectation
weigh on
spirit
fingers pinching
neck and
shoulder blades

I need the hush
of thunder
silence of
a rainstorm
exquisite calm
of heavy rock
noise to cancel
the noise

Silence can often be more stressful than noise, it's true. Trappist monks must have a really hard time of it and, as for the silence of Outer Space: 'The everlasting silence of those infinite spaces frightens me' as a 17th century Frenchman called Blaise Pascal once commented.

I have been listening to Stephen Fry's "Inside your mind", how frightening events disrupt our sense of well being but how persistant things, like the noise of a rainstorm or the overwhelming "exquisite calm" of heavy rock music can be like a soothing blanket. The explanation is that our minds track changes. We are disturbed by the terrible things that are happening in the world which are separate events each demanding our attention and can lead to signs of distress:

Tinnitus anxiety
workload and
expectation
weigh on
spirit
fingers pinching
neck and
shoulder blades

Immersive experiences, thunder, rainstorms, a heavy rock concert allow our brains to lock in to each experience, locking out the stress events.

I love that last stanza!

Great take on the challenge!
