Gas! Gas! Gas!

Heavier than air
the mustard gas
sank to soil
with the gradual decent
of a deadly feather

GAS!  GAS! GAS!
The call too late
as skin blistered
breath, vision
cindered

Hands on shoulders
mirrored steps
lovers at the ball
as they moved toward
the dressing station

and they imagined
a fragrance
a balm to ashy lungs
a mixture
of poppies and lillies

Wow, powerful stuff.
I love this image:

Hands on shoulders
mirrored steps
lovers at the ball
as they moved toward
the dressing station

Love that last stanza and

a balm to ashy lungs

I read recently about WWI patients who came to hospital at Attingham Hall. The nurses were shocked and the condition of the incoming patients and their dreadful wounds.

Oh indeed, Jo. You have a wonderful poem there! I picked out exactly the same parts Bill did and that image

 poppies and lillies

is perfect. Also your deadly feather and the gas sinking to the ground is fantastic. WOW.

Glad you're back too!!! xox
