They abandoned the pier to a watery grave
and, sadly we watch as she loses her fight
as section by section her structure caves
Even Grade 1 listing just couldn’t save
a century giving us pure delight.
In memory of this dear old friend
stand filigree ironwork, decorative piles.
Now the City Council’s inactive crime
and the unsympathetic ravage of time
has brought this most ignominious end.
Why wasn’t she saved for the nation
this magnificent feat of Victorian skill?
A background drop from ‘Brighton Rock’
built with the grace of a long-case clock,
but betrayed by years of procrastination.
