My background:

Over the years as well as writing I've worked with many different community groups and individuals in need of support. I've been in a lot of unusual and sometimes sad situations, for instance being the only person at a street drinker's funeral, but I've also met some extraordinary people who have shown great optimism and great humour. All of this informs my work.

What inspired me to write Something Brilliant?

Something Brilliant was inspired by somewhere I once worked and it tells the story of two young people with a learning disability falling in love and taking on the institution they've been placed in. What prompted me to write the novel was the day I went back to visit that institution many years later. It was derelict and closed off. I climbed over the fence and had a look around, I took a couple of photos and as I stood there I could sense quite vividly all the people who'd lived and worked there. It felt very strange. I went home and I started to write a love story, a story of hope amidst the chaos of the hospital.

I didn't think the second novel would take this long.

My first novel The Tide was published back in 2005 to good reviews and okay not great sales but I kind of thought I'd arrived. I was even invited to read from it at the Edinburgh Book Festival. Surely getting the next novel published (assuming I could write one) was going to be a lot easier.

It wasn't.
