Draft 5

Memoirs of a bar steward are the accounts of Jacob Cox as he begins a new stage of his young 18 year old life. Jacob dreams of getting into the best university in the country and eventually becoming the Prime Minster of the United Kingdom, but better than this he dreams of escaping his most heinous family once and for all. A family which consists of an Irish gang lord mother, one who would have no qualms about sticking the paperboy’s puppy’s head up his behind if he fails to pay her protection money. A secretive, law shy father who is in the business of running up debt and then running away. A rule dodging, stray missile, twit of a supposedly identical twin brother called Miller and a cooler younger brother called Clint whose sole purpose in life is to point out all of Jacobs faults. Last of all is Marie, Jacobs 10 year old miniature sister, who he fears just might be more crazy and dangerous that the whole Cox family put together.

However, Jacob soon discovers that he is not going to be able to go to the best university in the country, in fact he is not going to be able to go to university at all, and instead of escaping his family, he is in fact about to embark on a whole new adventure with all of them as they all make the sudden and suspicious move to a new life in Devon, where they are about to take over a pub at the seaside.

Jacob must fight his family for control of the pub as Miller believes he is the Willy Wonka of the booze factory and that all the female staff are his Umpa Lumpa’s to be taken advantage of. Clint wants to steal all of Jacob’s glory and his father is in danger of getting the pub closed down before the first month is even over. Marie is mysteriously planning something which Jacob fears will bring disaster to them all and Jacob knows that his mother is planning something which will bring destruction to their rivals if she can’t be stopped.

If only Jacob had his family to deal with, he might just stand a chance at making a success of the new business, but his new home town is not the sleepy little resort he thought it would be, and he soon finds that his struggle to survive gets even harder as the Town mayor publically vows to boot him back to Birmingham, the love of his life, Winky, turns out to be engaged to the self proclaimed hardest man in the world, and the big event to save the pub goes off with a bang, in many, many ways.

Ok, try this on for size.

18 year old Jacob Cox had his life all planned out. He was about to pass his A levels, get into the best university in the country, earn a fortune, and get elected Prime Minister, becoming the most respected stateman the country had ever seen. But best of all he was finally going to escape his family.

A family which consists of a mother whose business involves beating the living daylights out of people and sticking their pets heads up where the sun don’t shine. Then there's his ratty face Father who's in the business of running up debt and then running away; a rule dodging, carefree identical twin who likes the good life so long as it's free, and is the exact opposite of Jacob in every way; and a cooler younger brother, Clint, whose sole purpose in life is to point out all of Jacobs faults while acting like he's God's gift to everything. And last but not least, Jacob's psychotic 10 year old sister who he fears just might be more crazy and dangerous than the whole Cox clan put together.

However, Jacob's rise to greatness comes to a shuddering halt when his family make the sudden and suspicious move from Birmingham down to Devon, where it turns out they have taken over a pub, lock, stock and fermenting beer barrel. Instead of being crushed, the irrepressable Jacob sees it as his new springboard to success, but first he must fight his family for control of the business. This includes stopping his twin brother from driving away all of the female staff and customers with his loose loving; ignoring his cooler younger brother whose ‘rubbish’ ideas are actually much better than his own; and circumventing a ten year old sister whose secret scheming Jacob fears the most. He must also stop his ex-gang boss mother from taking out a rival landlord. If all these weren't bad enough, Jacob suspects that the O’Shea’s - his mother's gangster relatives - have some ghastly hold over his shifty, debt riddled father, and are involved in the Cox's mysterious acquisition of their new home.

The new business venture fails to be the early success that Jacob had originally hoped, and if he wants to stay he must act fast or they will all be returning to the Midlands before the summer is out. His plans begin to crumble when loyal customers are killed, and the town mayor brands him a terrorist. He also discovers the love of his life is engaged to one of the most dangerous men in Torquay. All these events lead up to a spectacular finale when one of the top reality TV shows comes to town to film in the Cox’s pub. The big event to save the pub goes off with a bang in more ways than one.

Along the way Jacob learns the hard truth about chasing one's dreams and the struggle to hold onto them at any cost.

You've really put a lot of thought into this, I see that you've gone back over previous drafts and taken different elements to put this together, so I offer you the biggest thanks. It flows really good and paints the characters and their situation very well.

Hm

Off the top of my head

Maybe I'd put He
THOUGHT
he was about to pass his A levels, because the big thing about Jacob is that whats in his head is often very different to the reality.

Hi Bar Steward. This sounds like quite a romp and one I can readily visualise. In fact my only worry would be it does sound a bit like the clan in Shameless on Ch4, so just be aware of that. Naomi has tighted it up a lot but don't lose yourself completely. I liked the phrase and image of the female Ompah Loompas, those little touches are your voice and your synopsis but also read as would the actual work. Well done and I look forward to reading the actual book.

Agreed, and I admit I dithered over whether or not to keep that line.
