I set my watch for half past nine
and arranged to meet my
courtesan
my lover, my demimondaine, my demirep,
my queen of the night,
my inamorata,
my mistress, my my my, is that the time?
I can’t be late for my concubine.

Hi Tony - I laughed out loud at this. It appeals to me because it's a good joke, but also because of the word-play in 'my my my' - which seems to be the poem laughing at itself - and the thesaurus words for mistress.

It can be fatal to explain a joke, but for me the humour lies in a subtext - it could easily be about being late for some such tedious thing as seeing the bank manager, something we don't want to do anyway. But that's under the surface. What we read is a very nice twist on being late, making funny something that's usually short of comic potential.

James.

Hi Tony,

I also found this very amusing. For me it was the wittiness of the list of synonyms followed by the unexpected rhyme - concubine/nine/time.

Thanks for that!!

Thanks for viewing it in the way it was meant, light hearted and meaning to be funny about just that. being late.

Tony
