My Chest

Stowed away
Shielded from searching eyes
Protected from prying fingers
I have a secret chest.

Scuffed from careless handling
Chipped from endless travelling
Still, it has a rich patina
A darkening mahogany
That deepens with time.

And for its burnished lock
Forged by fate’s forgotten blacksmith
And fashioned with
The alchemist’s insight,
There is only
One key.

I think of the perfect, unique fit between lock and key, and the gentle, mortal treasure, beating steadily within. Loved the gentle reference to texture.
