Post Card From The Sea-side

The horizon shimmers. Sultry heat sends clouds of flying ants up into a pale sky. Swallows and gulls soar and dive, enjoying this rare summer banquet.
Nearby, the sea sloshes in lethargic motion. On a rock, a crab waves an amputated claw at crows that gather squawking over flesh now brutally torn and shredded.
A lazy, middle aged man, his head red and peeling, scratches wet, hairy armpits and belches a Scrumpy belch. His wife, wearing a Kiss Me Quick hat, shows her tipsy disapproval with a sharp nudge of a bony elbow.
They get up, sand sticking to their backsides and white skinned legs. ‘Ice cream?’ she asks, puckering mock flirtatious lips that deepen into tram-line wrinkles.
Her husband nods and farts a cheese and onion fart. His wife lets out a harsh, lager sodden laugh. Then they sway, arm in arm, like drunken dancers, lurching towards Holly’s Place, leaving their litter behind in a shallow sand pit.

Hey Tusker,
Good read! As the title suggests, this is akin to a postcard, a brief moment, well captured. I can see the postcard, probably the image of the two's rear ends and pasty white legs, sand caked and utterly out of place. I like how content they seem to be in each other's humanness.
Would be nice to have a story from these two, but this is very nice as is.

brief nit: how does a crab wave its amputated claw? Unless it's someone else's amputated claw?

Thanks Jordan for your comments.
I see what you mean regarding the amputated crab claw.
I wanted to create, in a few brief moments, the post card as a tiny film showing the beauty and cruelty of nature, and the total disregard of those two holidaymakers who spoil that beauty by leaving their rubbish behind.

They are not exactly a golden couple are they Jennifer?! But a typical sea side scene well painted, warts and all.

Hi Jennifer, this was great, just like one of those slightly bawdy postcards from seasides of yesteryear. I liked the transition from the shimmering horizon to the larger than life bodily functions of the couple.

Oh, I like all that scatological squelching and belching, Jen. Great use of language and a real sea-side post card feel. Nicely done.

Hi Jen
I was once in a play called 'Seaside Postcard', which was McGill brought to life.
Great story that caught the essence of the British at play quite wonderfully.

Very seaside postcard - there was something very real about this couple. I rather liked them - though I'm not sure I'm meant to? Something very ruthless about the sun shining down on all our imperfections - the glare isn't very forgiving? But these two are very forgiving of each other - and unaware of the litter they leave behind in their 'sandpit'.
I liked the crab's amputated claw. I suppose maybe he can't wave it but such a vivid image.
