In a short while, like a limb, you must cut off your innocence, discard those bonds that you now enjoy with nature and its creatures.

You must set aside all emotions. Push them deep into dark recesses without any possibility of their resurrection.

Once this reality is achieved, your juvenile uncertainty will be replaced with cunning and great wisdom. You will stalk, pursue and overcome with the silent agility of our God, The Great Invisible One.

To survive, my child, you must kill without mercy, and if you heed my advice, you will grow up to replace our esteemed but ageing leader, Silver Wolf.

Hmm, and there you have it. How to survive.

Certainly has a bite, Jennifer.

I hope this isn't taken to literally in these straitened times

In human terms, John, just going on my experience, it happens.

But, this is a wolfie story not a human one.

Thanks for your kind comment.

Happy New Year to you.

A very wolfie story, Jennifer! Great last sentence. And I really like the idea of a wolf having to cut its bonds with nature in order to succeed.

I really enjoyed this.

Not sure about the limb part, I thought he was talking about a leg at first. As wolves are not known for their woodworking abilities I might be tempted to do without that part!

A little cracker.

Thanks Nick.

It's a fantasy tale. Mother Wolf speaks in a human voice. The cutting off of a limb is her analogy of what her child must do to survive.
