Pen poised, writing stops. The answer machine clicks on informing a salesman that there's nobody home. Goodbye.

'Any chance of a cuppa?' A forlorn request comes from below.

Replying, like the demented author from 'The Shining,' I yell out for a black coffee and two shots of Jack Daniels.

I start to write. My biro is dry.

Just an everyday story in your house - eh? It didn't seem menacing at all - but it depends what's in that coffee!

I hate it when my biro drys up.

Cheers

Hi Jennifer, you spoke to the writer in me with this flash. Love that third line about The Shining style dementia. Wo hasn't had a day like this?! I think maybe you need a comma after "clicks on" in the first line. And maybe we could have a first line of a novel in place of 'my biro is dry'? Now I know I said I wasn't a sadist but I bet you can come up with a great opening line for a novel in the seven words you'd have left.

Thanks Avis and Sarah. It's been such a hectic with son home from Aussie. Can't think of anything after 'biro runs dry.' Tears will be soaking paper, next week when he goes back.

Best cure for a Parched Quill - dip it in the Jack Daniels - that's all Jack Daniels is good for anyway - then pour a Bushmills and inspiration will flow like the blarney!

She's a girl likes plenty of lead in her pencil

No, No...lead is poisonous and I'm not a poison pen-er Oonah!

You must have the wrong end of the "stick"!

Oh yes! I know that feeling. I loved the Shining moment. Have they no idea what creative torment is?
My biro has a life of its own
Thanks for the read.

Jenifer

Ah yes, I have lots of days like this! And there's this guy outside belting at the door with an axe.

Do people still write in biros? On real paper? Really?

Great read. Thanks.

Yes, John, this lady does. Starts off in biro on virgin paper. Ends up on computer. Can't write straight onto the screen. Thanks.

Hi Jennifer, yes I definitely think it's best to start on paper, then move to screen. Nothing more irritating than a dry biro. Love the Jack Daniels and the assertive overriding of the forlorn request from downstairs! Forlorn is one of my favourite words.
