Love (6)

It is so much
easier to give
than to take
but until
we have learned
to take
we cannot know
the true spirit
of giving

We must learn
not to punish
those who give
for our self-contempt
at needing to take

The true spirit
of giving and taking begins
with knowing and liking
ourselves

(Cf: John Steinbeck - The Log From The Sea Of Cortez)

OK, I'm pretty slow, I know, but I don't understand the (6); this does however, ahve a familiar feel to it: does the numeral signify a reworking?
That aside, I like the plain, spare language and directness of communication; my onely suggestion would be an extra line's gap between 'take' and 'The true spirit', as it looks on the page at first as though these lines flow together, whereas they require separation.
Otherwise, muchly enjoyable and wiseful!!

Best,

T

Thanks - theonly significance of the number is that I am working on a collection and have tied to put anumber of single-though poems together as as a sequence. The intention would be to simply to print them that way. For such sligh poems I rather resisted the idea of giving each a 'special' name.

I agree about the split - done. Thanks
