WriteWords talks to Juli Klass, aka WW member JoolsK, about her recently launched independent publishing company Mighty Erudite

Tell us all about the press; history, ethos, etc

Mighty Erudite was born after a particularly depressing shopping expedition to a certain high street book shop. There was little to buy to titillate the true bibliophile and as a member of WriteWords, I know how many talented and brilliant writers fail to find a publisher willing to take on something that doesn’t appeal to mass market tastes.

We have absolute conviction that there is a reading market for those supposedly ‘hard to publish’ categories; poetry, short fiction, novellas and genre-ambiguous fiction. We believe that if we provide an avenue for original and gifted writers to publish their work, there are readers who will buy it and love it.

The books we publish are for those who sniff the pages of folios they are about to buy; for those who will feel the paper and run their fingers down the spine. They are designed to be things of great beauty; always hard bound, always beautiful and always content rich.

How do you find your writers?

So far, through referral although we’ve recently placed notices for invitations to submit in various places; our website, the WriteWords website and New Writing Partnership site.

What excites you about a piece of writing-

It’s a barely tangible thing and comes down to a combination of things plus the addition of something electric. In fiction it’s the intensity of the characters, setting and plot with a strong dose of beautiful writing and originality. With poetry it’s even harder to define and probably comes down to the “goose bump factor”; words, lines and stanzas that shift something in the reader and those sharp shocks of recognition.

and what makes your heart sink?

Writing that fails to recognise the intelligence of the reader, writing that is safe and fails to take risks.
