Darkness

It's dark outside
It's dark inside
It's dark everywhere I turn
It's darkness like the night
A darkness without the stars

It's dark behind the door
I wonder....
If I am brave
To walk across the floor
Out the door

I think I am
I'll try once
Taking my companion 'the white stick'
If I do this
Mum will be proud
Dad will be proud
Everyone will rejoice
To see how brave I have become

The accident left a life
A dark life
At least it's life
I am alive
Amongst my family and loved ones

There is hope
I will see the colours again
We live in hope
Technology can do a lot
I have a promise from the doc
Soon there will be no darkness

Oh my! This is so poignant, so compelling. It is a clever balance of hope and terror which cuts through the cheerful optimism and leaves a huge doubt and fear for the future. There is irony and tension, I love the desperation of "I have a promise from the Doc", it tempts the fates and bodes disappointment. The power of faith and the frailty of scientific solutions.Loss of sight is a frightening prospect, we all appreciate the bravery of the blind and our own doubtful capacity to cope in those circumstances. I should have said I dedicate this poem to one of my great ancestor. I did heard that she was blind yet she was required to cook, get water from the wells. Without technology or much money life must have been hard for her. Yet she did do it.

Blind people need hope and help and maybe technology is the hope!
