Where are you
Poetry?

Sing to me, like the rat-tat-tat of the helicopter
That flies
Low
For some reason.

Where are you
Poetry?

Let me see your face.
Hiding there behind the neighbor’s
Rhododendron,
I see the tuft of your hair
Speckled
Like a trout.

Poetry,
it is time,
poetry,
to be,
poetry,
to be,
Something.

Hi Jordan. I often ask this question! I'm sure there must be lots of poetry out there waiting to be formed but I too often can't get a hold of it! I like the form of this, the lineage particularly.

I wonder if it could stand removing all the final stanza. I like the idea of ending with
I see the tuft of your hair
Speckled
Like a trout.

Enjoyable!

Quirky and intriguing, especially the exotic small creature (Poetry) hiding behind the rhododendron. With 'hair speckled like a trout'! That's all we know about it, but I guess it must be either a slithy tove or a mome rath. Your elusive creature is a lively, humorous way of catching the unnerving feeling most poets have from time to time, that they've no idea either where poetry is or even what it is.

I see what Joanie means about the last section, but I don't think it should be dropped. The repeated 'poetry'/'to be' has a desperation about it, as if the poet has his hands around Poetry's throat (if that's conceivable).

What I would do is cut the helicopter lines to:

Sing to me, like the rat-tat-tat
of a low
helicopter.

If you were publishing a collection or pamphlet, this might be a good 'preface' poem.

James.
