Category, pigeon-hole, label -
you think this means you 'know'.
You believe you've a handle on me,
the world, all around,
but you've simply fooled yourself so.

You don't 'know'; you don't dare look -
Cold dead eyes so unable to see.
No colours or contours are there
in this void
that cannot incorporate me.

How could one get a handle on an entity, a being, that continues to grow, develop, and is so movingly fluid?

Ever wondered how some eyes are programmed to ignore what's there - what's really there? Sure, our eyes see trees, people, signs, cars, etc. But if an alien spaceship landed outside Tescos to get cheap fuel, most eyes would dismiss it.
Trouble is, we too often do that with the people right in front of us.

I think we live in a society that takes too much for granted - generalisation and pigeon-holing is how people get thru each day. It's the same categorisation that led to the holocaust...

If you have the time, you may want to read 'Exterminate the Brutes' by Sven Linqvist - part travel diary, part historical analysis about colonialism's excesses...leading to the holocaust in Europe.

I'll look out for it Fearless. Have you read any of Hannah Arendt's work? Fascinating link between bureaucracy and subjugation.

Definitely do. If it's possible, it illustrates how 'easily' the holocaust could repeat itself in a supposedly 'civilised' society. Very scary reading...the efficiency of the Nazi 'machine' was awesome...modern productivity and bureaucracy at their extreme...

I thought this piece was brilliant, very powerful because it is so true. Unfortunately I have to suffer being categorised everyday, and the stereotypes that come with it. So, i really did love this poem.

Loved this too! Triggered another memory. I wrote something called 'personpoem' a while ago, which covers similar terrain. Might post it. You did well to give up the City-sham!

Best,

Mike
