Like insects in crevices crawling and swarming
We waited for Inti, Pablito and Che
Our murderous crossfire would find them defenceless
Outnumbered, surrounded, deserted, betrayed.

I am the Hero of La Huegara
I executed Che Guevara
and watched his blood unfurl
over the baked mud schoolroom floor.

We captured Guevara and waited for orders
The Yanquee confirmed that the deed must be done
I levelled the barrel and squeezing the trigger
I thought of the glory and fame I had won

I am the Hero of La Huegara
I executed Che Guevara
He cursed before he fell
Sending Imperialists to hell.

We cleaned up his body and dressed him in linen
Our photographs proved that the rebel was dead
The agent had told us the struggle was over
But we had created a legend instead.

I am the Hero of La Huegara
I executed Che Guevara
I answered my people's will
and suffer the consequences still.

The brave Comandante was lauded in Cuba
a million voices exhalted his name
As Fidel delivered a golden ovation
and vowed that all comrades would brandish the flame.

I am the Hero of La Huegara
I executed Che Guevara
but nothing can ever absolve my shame
and noone remembers my name.

As a child who coveted Mao's little red book and had the iconic portrait of Che on the wall (I hear the guy who took the picture finally won copyright recently), reading your fine piece took me back.

Thanks, Fearless

P.S. I wonder if anyone wrote a poem about Gavrilo Princip?

Great poem. Great rythym. It's like I am being talked to. Cool, Peter. Love, Maria.

<Added>

I know what it reminded me of. Hiawatha.

Maria , thanks for your comments. I am so glad you liked it. I am not too sure what to say about Hiawatha! I will take it as a compliment.

I was fortunate to meet at a meeting of the Cuba Solidarity to be in the company of Ameria
Guevaria(2002)daughter of Che.
The main point she wanted to get across was to say people who have the information(our neck of the world)should try to express against the status news..Loved the poem , expressing that conscience,is ultimate truth ...Happy Easter.
