They can
call me a champion,
that's their right.

They can
call me a role model,
a professional,
a world-class
athlete.
The best.

They'll never know
what those words mean.
What they really mean.

I kinda like that.

Hi Stephen. I keep re-reading this. I can picture you with a superior smirk, almost, on your face, as you say
They'll never know
what those words mean.
What they really mean.

OK - tell me, what do they really mean??

I like the form of this and the last line, especially. Good one!

It's refreshing sometimes to have a poem that just says quite a simple, uncomplicated thing and isn't too multi-layered. This one makes an immediate impact because I think it's that type of poem which is obviously personal, but would ring a bell with lots of other people too. Even if we haven't actually achieved champion status, we've probably imagined doing so, or dreamed of some other kind of success. Maybe to see oneself referred to as 'The acclaimed writer...'? And the added spice is to think, 'Nobody really knows what it feels like, except me.'

That's what succeeds about this poem - it's a private thought, but it will have lots of people nodding in recognition.

James.

HI Stephen

I think you poem has great appeal to us all as we would all like to be champions of soemthing!

I like the direct way this has been written and the clarity with which it speaks to the reader, as James says it is a very straightforward poem and that is is refreshing.

I enjoyed this
thanks
Tina

Thanks very much for commenting.

I didn't want this to sound bigheaded or arrogant. Just to show the depth to being good at something.
