Snatcher the Cat, who's blacker than black,
Goes hunting on moonless nights.
Like a slippery shadow on soft padded feet,
Wrapped in darkness so tight.

Out of the cat door and onto the grass,
Not a sound, not a scratch or a scrape.
It’s only the stars that know that he’s there,
And they¹re silent at Snatchers escape.

All through the flowers to the foot of the wall
Where he pauses and looks at the sky,
And just for a moment two burning white stars
Like icefire shine in his eyes.

He¹s grown very wise has Snatcher the Cat,
And he won¹t take a nestling or mouse.
He knows that the people he owns would be angry,
And he likes to have them in his house.

So Snatcher the Cat has become very good
At catching the neighbourhood rats.
Big ones or small ones, grey, brown or black,
Our Snatcher is no fussy cat.

But luck is not with him this cold, silent night
Though he patiently hunts until dawn.
So he pads softly home in the whispering haze
To sleep ‘til the new night is born.

Being the neighbour of several cats, I enjoyed this poem. Wish the ones around here were as sensible as Snatcher.

This is great - reminds me of Kato, the black cat who used to spend more time at my house than at his owners. Tried to punce of a butterfly once and missed. Not at all a ferocious feline but adorable.

Lovely poem - not just for kids.

Hey John

I think you've really found your forte in these kinds of poems. lovely and energetic. You should be sending them out to children's poetry anthologies.

1 point you lose your rhythm slightly at a couple of points - get someone else to read it out loud from cold reading. you'll be able to hear it.

Cheers

Hi everybody,

My apologies for being slow to reply, and thankyou for all your comments. I had typed a reply a few days ago but like an idiot shut down the program without actually submitting it ! Talk about Homer Simpson (Duh!)

Cats are beguiling arent they, we have had cats for over 30 years, all SPCA refugees.

Thanks Fevvers, I shall try submitting. Any ideas who might be a good company to start with ?

John P.
