I know.
Let's write about
the good old days,
when we hadn't achieved
our dreams.
And
we still
got excited about
getting drunk.

Hi Stephen. 'I know' is dead simple but a clever opening line. I suppose it could be said by almost anybody in a lot of different situations, but to me it suggests a crowd of young people hanging about saying they're bored, what's there to do, there's no action, and then somebody coming up with 'I know, let's...' But the invisible question that precedes the poem isn't 'What can we do?' but 'What should we write about?' This isn't a crowd of teenagers. These are 'mature' people, and poets to boot.

It's as if the speaker - and others, there seem to be other poets present - have got writer's block because they're 'grown up', they've achieved their 'dreams' (or, at least, the ones that are achieveable) and their lives are too settled and too dull. So they have to write nostalgically about times when they were more alive.

I hope you won't mind if I call this poem a little joke in verse. I did take it as a joke - one with an edge to it.

James.

Thanks,

Even though I'm only 26, I feel myself maturing and my lifestyle changing somewhat. Things that used to be important are becoming less important and friends lives are changing to.

This is a bit of a joke verse and is a bit of a jibe at the abundance of autobiographies about at the moment.

Cheers for commenting

Hi Stephen-

read in the light of your comment about autobiographies, this gets funnier! I imagine you meanthe ones written by celebs under 30? I like the slight tone of disbelief in the

And
we still
got excited about
getting drunk.

HI -

As an ancient old sage to this dialogue of youth let me assure you that getting excited is not limited to age defining barriers!! Even about getting drunk!!!!!

I really like this is as it is packed with impact! Like James I too like the opening 'I know' - great stuff and the sentiment of the poem which is very effectively conveyed in a short sharp message - thanks

Tina
