The Theatre of Death
The props break their promises
the scenery really is set to decay
the footed boards are curling up,
the nervous rigging is frayed
the heavy foot lights are fused
the safety curtain is burning,
the orchestra pit is an empty yawning silence
beside which only the exit door is left working
at this stage the actors are corpsed to resting
the sound of seats tipping their final applause.
