Summary: This song was performed over three consecutive runs at the News Revue in London. For those who don't know, News Revue is a leading satirical venue for those of us who need to get out more. This was my take on the appalling state of the railways.

SHITTY SHITTY RAILWAYS
(Adapted from the song ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’)

Shitty railways, shitty shitty railways
Shitty railways, shitty shitty railways
Shitty railways, shitty shitty railways

Oh you shitty shitty railways
Shitty shitty railways we hate you
And on shitty shitty railways, shitty shitty railways what we do
So far in the buffet car a fiver for a stale cheese roll
Rip off shitty shitty railways you really have no soul
Rip off shitty shitty railways you really have no soul

Shitty railways, shitty shitty railways
Shitty railways, shitty shitty railways
Shitty railways, shitty shitty railways

Oh you shitty shitty railways
Shitty shitty railways we hate you
And on shitty shitty railways, what we really need is a working loo
Not cheap, can’t get a seat, not enough standing room
Rip off shitty shitty railways it’s total doom and gloom
Rip off shitty shitty railways it’s total doom and gloom

Connex is the weakest link, Southwest really makes you think
Of safer ways of getting around
Disruption is a way of life, wheels coming off the track is rife
Enduring relentless delays

Oh shitty, you’re shitty, really really shitty
Shitty shitty railways we hate you
And looking iffy looking really shifty it’s so clear you have no clue
Skin scars in a railway car oh what a grizzly time we’ll find
Death trap shitty shitty railways dead bodies on the line
Death trap shitty shitty railways dead bodies on the line

Shitty shitty railways shitty shitty railways
Rip off death trap shitty shitty railways

END

Hi Baumski, I can't remember the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang song particularly well, but this seems to fit the tune. At first it's very light hearted, but the 'dead bodies on the line' is actually rather hard-hitting given rail disasters over recent years. I couldn't make up my mind whether this was taking a fun piece too far, or an effective way of getting a point across!

All the best,

Ben

Actually, Ben, it's a bit of both I suppose. I've always found that if a point can be made without making the audience struggle, then I've found I've just about got it right.

Every train disaster is like a carbon copy of a previous one. Because of greed and government (all governments) neglect, people die and that makes me angry.

But never let it be said that I am bitter and twisted - well, actually, they do but that's another story - and I'll be posting another song very soon.

Thanks for the feedback.

Martin

Martin,
Again...brill... could just picture a carriage-full of swaying passengers singing along together on a deathtrack to ... well nowhere, essentially.
Superb.

Cheers. Thanks very much for that Debs. Just as an aside, and perhaps as an amusing way to pass the time, next time you take the train, start a chorus of Shitty Shitty Railways and before you know it the whole carriage will be rocking..... On seconds thoughts though, that might not be such a bright idea after all.

Whicky Woo!
