Bring them all back:
sheep out
people in
from all corners

There is a time to cry
to feel the grief
of an empty worked field
birds wheeping
in sympathy

But now new drinkers
taste the cool water
of the fern-fringed well

Hunters fishers sailors
crofters and villagers
settlers tourists
and telecommuters

Wave upon wave
still hits the ancient shore
lifting layer after layer
of dust
to a distant
ocean floor

Ooh!This sounds just like the kind of rest-cure I'm looking for - except for all those people. I could be a telecommuter, though. I loved that part about the fern-fringed well and the uncovering of layers - and the 'wheeping' of the birds. I can see and hear them.

Some strong imagery here and goes to show that even something as ordinary as waves crashing on a shore has a long long long history behind it! I really liked this. It is beautifully paced and reads brilliantly aloud. Moving and clever piece of work.

Hi Sheila and Beanie

Thanks for that. I am not sure how much I "like" this one - I do like the ideas and imagery, but I had hoped to write something a bit more lyrical... however, I don't want it to be sentimental, more relfective of current times.

I think eventually I will work it up into a fuller version so I can compare the two.

Thanks for the encouragement.

Lucy
