Ashes

Summary: The poem Vitai Lampada has an eerie resonance with the world we seem to live in now. I thought it would be interesting and cathartic to rework it.

'Play up, play up and play the game!'
A hero's chant in the fight for the Ashes.
The ashes of bodies destroyed by a bomb,
Limbs torn apart in more violent clashes.

Freddie was quick with the bat and the ball,
Ponting's performance was equally stunning.
But what about Jean Charles - the man on the tube,
Shot by police because he was running?

'Play up, play up and play the game!'
A hero's chant in the fight for the Ashes.
The ashes of bodies destroyed by a bomb,
Limbs torn apart in more violent clashes.

We cheered for our boys in this battle of wits,
Thund'rous applause when the ball cleared the stand.
But how to react to a man blown to bits
Or to blood-stained survivors, their heads in their hands?

'Play up, play up and play the game!'
A hero's chant in the fight for the Ashes.
The ashes of bodies destroyed by a bomb,
Limbs torn apart in more violent clashes.

Warne is a wizard, a cricketing great,
His focus stopped England from getting the win.
But watch Tony closely (or George, his mate)
If you want a real lesson in spin.

'Play up, play up and play the game!'
A hero's chant in the fight for the Ashes.
The ashes of bodies destroyed by a bomb,
Limbs torn apart in more violent clashes.

Five tests and it's over, for better or worse.
We'll open the champers, or sob in our beer.
But the real game's just starting and we're all made to play
Unwilling, unknowing and living in fear.

Mr B Hi there

good work here. The piece scans well and the rhythm is good; not forced. I read the original piece which has quite an impact and is in a different style to yours. It is nice to read a piece that links to an old classic.

I have not been able to write anything really about the issues you have written I have felt devoid of words that could. But you have managed to express this horrible situation very well (as did longjohn)

We don't have to live in fear. We have to be strong, remember our heritage and how brave the people of england have always been in the face of evil people.

Have you seen the website

werenotafraid.com

I posted some photos up there after the attack on the UK.

Depicts the fear just below the surface, even when we're about (one of) our favourite sports.

So many excellent, excellent lines

At first sight cricket and terror don't go together - but you showed us they do.

Top drawer.
