Normally Different
Posted: 30 June 2005 Word Count: 77 Summary: Inspired by a number of dinner functions I've been to, you try to blend in and be normal but its not you and situations make you realise you aren't the same as everyone else. There's also falseness all around.

Seeking to be normal, a common cancer. Perception, is not who you are. Only you know that.
Dimmed lights welcome me, into traditional feasting. Anticipation, of a jolly evening. I am more comfortable this time.
Factory-line important males, lounge in supremacy. Hesitantly, they engage me. Ruby alcohol fuelled chat.
Dazzling fillies strut, jewels amongst cogs. Decorate, a plain backdrop. Softens the mood.
Royalty sits above, the peasant majority. Encouragement, dished out to the deserving. Warm fulfil ness.

I read this with a knowing smile on my face, thoroughly enjoying your incisive perceptions!
I'm off to another dreaded 'do' on Friday night and so your poetry was especially well timed for me. I will keep it in mind as I mingle, part cog and part decor!
Thanks!

Hi Stephen,
I really liked the mood and ideas you capture here..some rich and vivid description..
Factory-line important males,
lounge in supremacy.
Hesitantly,
they engage me.
Ruby alcohol fuelled chat.
Dazzling fillies strut,
jewels amongst cogs.
Decorate,
a plain backdrop.
Softens the mood.
very strong and moody stanzas...
I wans't too sure of the "royalty" reference..is this the hosts?
enjoyed

Hi, Stephen.
I agree with the others; sorry I'm late commenting. I had a wry smile on my face! Very true; very nicely observed and conveyed.

Fine piece. Excellent observation. Just a thought: 'jewels among the cogs', perhaps?

Sad isn't it, but I guess one has to conform... or perhaps not? Whatever, we can all relate.

Stephen, a few thoughts:
* reminded me of a Larkin poem - Vers de Societe. You may know it?
* I think if it were me I would think very carefully about using the word 'cancer' - perhaps I feel it's used too lightly here. What I'm trying to say is that I think it must be respected given the emotions that it carries.
* 'jolly' I like the use of the word here.
* 'ruby alcohol' seems lazy writing to me - wine? Chianti? Perhaps experiment with some more specific words. 'dazzling fillies' seems cliche (?).
* Not sure 'warm fulfil ness' works - seems ambiguous to me, perhaps over written.
Perhaps I am just nosey and would really like to know the specifics about this stereotypical dinner party? OR perhaps it really was that 'stereotypical'?? But I tend to believe that there must have been at least one genuine thread/aspect to the evening? I'd be more interested to read about that.
Yes, I think we can all recognise, however, the veneer.
All the best, Nikki

Thanks for all comments, they have been taken in.
Cancer is a strong word but for me, pursuing normality is something that eats away at my soul.
