I was a published poet at 16 (four poems in a Heinemann anthology). For many years I've been a children's fiction and non-fiction writer, but recently decided to switch to writing mainly science-fiction and fantasy. I'm a great believer in life-long learning and in order to find out more about writing speculative fiction, attended the six-week full time Odyssey Fantasy Writing Workshop in Manchester, New Hampshire where my application story won an award. Odyssey was a great experience and I recommend it to anyone who wants to improve their writing in an intense, concentrated, but enjoyable environment, to a degree that would normally take years to achieve.
I've also attended the Milford SF Writers' Workshop (in Snowdonia), sat on various panels at SF/fantasy conventions, and am currently providing regular aural articles on writing for the SF podcast, Starship Sofa. In 2008, I attended the 15-day writing master class taken by Dean Wesley Smith and Kristine Kathryn Rusch, in Oregon.
I have taught creative writing with the Open College of the Arts and been tutor for various local authorities' evening classes. I've also been a freelance editor for many years, both for publishers and writers. I was a reader/mentor with Cornerstones Agency but now work with my own clients at a range of levels: editing, coaching, mentoring. I strongly believe that any form of teaching should be two-way and therefore my approach to working with a new client is very much dependent on what he or she specifically needs.
I have also been a grasscutter on the Gower Peninsular, a performer in street theatre, a props maker in the Welsh National Opera, a signwriter and a personal development trainer. I am an ex-English table soccer champion and for the past twenty-five years have maintained an active interest in various areas loosely connected by the term 'Earth mysteries'.
