Write an essay and win a house- yes, a house

  Posted on 14/02/2003

American author Cathie Pelletier wants to move house. So she's giving new writers the chance to win her Tennessee mansion, plus 35 acres of land, all for writing a 250 word essay on why they want the house.

The catch? The entry fee is $125. But Cathie and her partner Tom, also a writer, are at pains to emphasise how fair and honest this contest it- they've pledged that they will only let the comp go ahead if they get betweenn 3800- 7000 entries. They reckon that makes the odds fair enough. There are 9 other prizes, ranging from $100 to a 30-day trip to Nashville or the cash equivalent.

Cathie, a bestselling novelist, says that they've only been in the house two years and have finally given in to their wish to return to the east coast state of Maine. To do this, they could either sell their Tennessee home for less than it's worth, or run this contest. 'Somebody will get our fabulous home, and 35 acres of land, for $125', the couple say. 'That seems fair to us.'

For more details, check the website- there are entry rules, photos of the house and land, and more information about Cathie, her books, and why she's doing this.

Wow, did this house raffle work out in the end? In the UK we're seeing lots of similar types of house competitions and sweepstakes, but recently a few of them were cancelled apparently:
