This year's 39-strong longlist for the €35,000 Frank O'Connor international short story prize sees a runaway American bestseller vying with an almost unknown, self-published author. Also on the list is WriteWorder Vanessa Gebbie.

Thanks for all the lovely good luck messages!

Glass Bubble will need it, there are some amazing writers on the list. I am reading Unaccustomed Earth, and knowing full well I'm in the presence of a giant in literary terms.

It is great to work with a publisher like Salt who nominates their writers for this award. I know there are other small presses who don't bother. But it is also an indication of how healthy the short story is, despite bad press, so don't lose heart if you are a writer of the short form!
