Judith Adams Interview

Judith Adams

Judith Adams, playwright, talks to Anna Reynolds

What’s your writing background? Can you give us a biog?
Started age 40 Look at my CV on www.judithadams.co.uk

How did you first start writing?
I found a story I was desperate to tell, and a dead woman’s voice I was desperate to hear speak again in a live show.

What mistakes do you think you made early on, and how did you learn?
I never learn.

Who are your personal favourite writers/plays and why?
I like novelists best.
I love Angels in America, part one.
I love Ben Jonson’s language
I wish Emily Brontë had written plays
I love The Seagull for sentimental reasons
I love Eddie Izzard
I love Time Code by Mike Figgis
I think some of the best scripts are found in The Simpsons.

How did you find your agent/first producer?
Via another writer, and by having a strong first play to attract attention.

What was your breakthrough project?
My first project – Burdalane. Stage and radio.

What excites you about writing?
Not writing. Wrighting. A playwright should picture in all dimensions. That’s what intrigues me – breaking down the linear, challenging story structure, crossing boundaries, annoying the establishment. Especially directors, who just want flat words on a page.

What’s the worst thing about writing?
Never enough time or money to do all one wants to do.

What are the most common mistakes writers make?
They might write just for money or fame – and thereby preserve the structures that need changing.

If someone has an idea for a play, or some scenes, what would you suggest they do next?
