Don’t Sign Me Up

Summary: An imagined letter from Robert Edwin Peary to his pushy mother

I don’t want to go to the North Pole Mum
so don’t sign me up for the trip.
There’s holes in me mittens,
the cat’s just had kittens,
and the air right up there has a nip.

The dog’s caught a cold and gone Husky
so let’s leave the sled in the shed.
I don’t want froze toes
like those poor Eskimos
and I’m getting a cold in me head.

I think I’m in line for a rest Mum
so I’m going to bed for a kip.
Why not let some other
set out to discover
the route to the Northernmost tip?

I know that you’re anxious I make it
and not to obscurity slip,
but it’s covered with snow
and I don’t want to go -
so don’t sign me up for the trip.
