Smells like October

Posted: Wednesday, August 29, 2018 Word Count: 115 Summary: October, to me, has a smell. I can recognise it anywhere (and it doesn't need to be October to smell it). It heralds the end of summer and the begining of autumn. It reminds me that Halloween is round the corner. I love the smell and it makes me not miss summer :-) |
Fighting in the office
over air con or
whispers of breath
from the open window.
You smell the charcoal
and laughter.
Weekends of picnics
and BBQs.
Prosecco and “Planet Rock”.
Book and Scotch egg
in either hand.
Early evening
beer gardens.
Head tilted upwards
smiling at the sun
who clothes you in her
suffocating breath.
Without a tremor
you feel the change.
The need
for closed shoes.
Your long discarded
cardigan is again
office attire.
The beer garden
not as comfortable
in the cloud.
Midnight duvet fights
against sleep have
been won. Finally.
It smells like October.
Sun still playing with
the ends of your hair
and the kiss of frost
on your fingers.
